Meet Your Tour Guides!

Dave Fox is the founder of Globejotter Tours. He is the author of the bestselling book, Globejotting: How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals (and still have time to enjoy your trip!), as well as the travel humor book, Getting Lost: Mishaps of an Accidental Nomad, which won the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop Book Proposal Contest in 2004. His travel tales and articles have appeared in a variety of magazines, newspapers, and anthologies, including books by Lonely Planet and Rick Steves, and a variety of magazines and newspapers. He has been featured on the History Channel program, Weird U.S., for his knowledge of Scandinavian culture, and he has been an opening speaker for the Princess of Norway.

Dave first got hooked on international travel at age seven when his family moved from the United States to England. Since then, he has visited nearly 50 countries on five continents, and has worked as a tour guide and/or travel writing instructor in nearly half of them. In addition to England, he has lived in Norway and Turkey. While English is his first language, he speaks fluent Norwegian, decent French, and has a basic knowledge of several other European languages.

A veteran tour guide for Rick Steves, Dave also guides for Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour in Seattle and has worked as a guest lecturer on Holland America cruises. His travel journaling classes have been recommended in the Wall Street Journal. He teaches his classes frequently in the Seattle and around the Pacific Northwest, and has also taught travel writing in a wide range of international locations, from Samoa to Botswana.

Tran Phuc

Our local guide in Vietnam, Trân Phúc

Trân Phúc was born and raised in the small Mekong Delta village of Vinh Kim, and moved to Ho Chi Minh City in 1997 to pursue a degree in tourism. Phúc’s two very different homes give him a diverse knowledge of both big city and small town Vietnamese culture.

For several years, Phúc worked as a guide for English-speaking tourists with Sinh Balo Tours, one of Vietnam’s most reputable and respected tour companies. He left Sinh Balo in 2009 to work as a freelance guide and pursue his own tourism projects.

Dave and Phúc met on Dave’s first trip to Vietnam in 2008, when Dave and his now-fiancée, Kattina, hired Phúc for a three-day kayaking and cycling excursion around the Mekong Delta. Dave and Phúc quickly became friends. Phúc has since taken Dave on two motorbike adventures around southern Vietnam. He has served as Dave’s translator when Dave has interviewed people for freelance articles, and was also instrumental in planning the logistics of our Vietnam tour.

Phúc is an avid soccer player and cyclist. He lives in Saigon with his wife Ngoc, and their four-year-old son, An. He loves tour guiding because he has a deep curiosity for foreign cultures himself, and he sees the learning experience with his groups as a two-way street. “I like to learn from them and introduce my country to them,” he says. “You never stop learning.”

Sven Wondermoose

Globejotter Tours official mascot, Sven Wondermoose

Sven Wondermoose is the official mascot of Globejotter Tours. Born in Norway, Sven was adopted by Dave sometime in the 1990s when Dave was guiding a tour in Scandinavia. The duo has been traveling the world together ever since. Sven now has extensive travel experience in Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. He loves meeting people wherever he goes, and people love meeting him.

One of Sven’s primary roles with Globejotter Tours is to do a sun dance for us every day. Although he is a little moose, and can only do so much, the sun does seem to shine a little brighter when Sven waggles his antlers.

Sven has made friends with a wide variety of species worldwide, from humans, to cats, to zebras and hippos. When he’s not traveling (and sometimes when he is), his hobbies include juggling ice cream cones, Bollywood-style dancing, and flirting with the ladies. He knows how to cook marvelous 26-egg omelets, and loves to wash them down with quintuple shots of espresso.

You will also find Sven on Facebook, along with photos from many of his travel adventures. If you are on Facebook, Sven would love to be your friend there. Just search for “Sven Wondermoose” and send him a friend request.
